Why I started Family behavior learning

I have worked with parents/guardians for a broad age range of individuals from children as young as 18 months to adults in their 70s. The most common gap I found in all of my experience was a clear disconnect between dropping a child off at therapy and the child continuing to learn at home. Parents would ask for guidance and wanted to do more, but they didn't always get the individual support they needed...

I started Family Behavior Learning to bridge that gap between therapy and everyday life. I want parents to feel confident at home and in the community when interacting with their child. I want to foster growth between the parent and child as well as make incremental improvements to their life through continuous reinforcement and learning. I want to support parents so that they can help bring what the child learns during therapy to their home life.

When and where I found my passion

I started this journey way back in 2nd grade where I met a classmate that had many different disabilities. I felt like it wasn't fair that she, and all of her classmates, had to go to the bus by themselves without any company. So my friends and I would leave homeroom a little early and walk with them to the busses so they didn't have to do it alone. My classmate and I got very close; she was learning how to walk with a walker. A few times a week I would be called out of class to stand at the end of the hallway and have her walk towards me. She eventually learned to walk with her walker and shortly after she moved to a different school district. We said our goodbye but I wanted to continue to help, so throughout middle school, high school and college, I volunteered for special olympics.

In college I knew I wanted to do something with kids that needed a little extra help to navigate life. I had an internship where I could observe many different professions that helped kids with disabilities and I loved how and what the BCBAs did. I went on to get my Masters and certification to become a BCBA.

During graduate school I worked with kids 1.5 years old to 6 years old for an in-home therapy company, after graduation I worked at an adult day service program, boys group home and an ABA clinic.

I am constantly finding gratification helping families and children discover and achieve their greatest potential.
